Happy Holidays!

well, we're snowed in here in West Seattle -- we're not used to all this snow here! This little snowblind gnome is frozen to the back deck here ... poor little guy! Stay warm and happy holidays!

Love This!

This may be one of the most awesome things I've seen lately ... 70s rock stars at home with their parents! I love the pic of Frank Zappa ... that room is so awesome!

Honorable Mention!

I know I had promised regular postings and then three months go by and ... nothing. But, good news to share -- the picture below came in with an Honorable Mention Award with the Prix de la Photographie Paris 2007! Yay!

West Seattle 101

Just a little shameless plug here for a project I worked on last year that was a great project to work on and is now available on Adventure Press’ updated, bright and shiny new web site. Totally fun project to work on as West Seattle is where I call home and it was fun to find out all these cool things about my neighborhood. And, writer Lori Hinton is always fun and inspiring to work with!

Burlesque on MSN!

The Burlesque story I worked on for MSN.com’s City Guides went live last week and the whole story can be seen here. The whole slideshow of images can be seen here. What a fun project to have worked on!

And, a big bonus is that the whole story made in to the MSN homepage!

Chicken?

Worked on a photo shoot for Theatre Puget Sound’s annual “Live Theatre Week” project this past weekend. We had several models lined up for the shoot, lots of props and costumes, the idea was to create playful characters – very theatrical and playful. One of the props was this giant chicken head….we had to play with this outside the studio just for fun!

(I’ll post real photos from this shoot later – they came out pretty nicely I think!)

S**t-Covered Gold

Words of wisdom overheard from a man on his cell phone in a parking lot today:

“S**t-covered gold is better than s**t-covered.”

Hmmm, words well said I guess. Kind of a random thing to overhear in the parking lot and I wonder what the full context of that was!

Anyway, I’m continuing more of the Seattle burlesque stuff and shot Paula the Swedish Housewife last night. Wonderful person, amazing house, even more amazing closet of wardrobe and props!

A Polaroid Every Day

A friend had sent me this article which I thought was totally amazing. From 1979 until he died in 1997, this man took a Polaroid every day. Amazing and it made me a little sad. You can check out all of the Polaroids here but you should really read the back story first – very sad and amazing at the same time.

Burlesque!

That got your attention, huh? Well, I really had the best of intentions on updating this space much more frequently but life happens and it's been a busy life of late! I'll promise to try and do better in the future!

One of the projects I've been working on is a story on the Seattle burlesque scene for MSN.com's City Guides channel, and I've discovered that seattle has one of the best burlesque scenes, with only New York topping us! Who knew? Apparently, there are burlesque shows in seattle on almost any given evening...it's been a lot of fun and I've been getting some nice images I think. The posted image below is one of my favorites -- it reminds me of 1920s Paris for some reason, even though I wasn't really around in 1920's Paris to know what that feels like!

National Geographic Traveler

Late last year, I was approached by National Geographic Traveler to create a gallery for their Places of a Lifetime section. I was quite honored that they selected me to create a gallery for their Seattle section. You can have a peek at the gallery here.

You See Any Amphibians?

Had a really fun shoot this week for ‘Organic Gardening’ Magazine this past week. It was on King County’s plant salvage program, where the public are able to come to sites which are going to be basically bulldozed over and rescue all of the native plants they can to plant in their own yards before the bulldozers come. It was muddy and a little rainy and a little chilly but a lot of fun. At the end of the afternoon, as things were wrapping up, I was walking back towards the main staging area and I heard this little voice up on the ridge.

‘Hey, did you get any good pictures?’

‘Yeah, I hope so!’

‘You see any amphibians?’

‘Well, no.’

Pause for a moment. And then, this ten-year old boy says ‘Well, I’ve got a salamander up here if you want to take a picture.’

Of course I did! Nice end to a great day!

New Site!

Welcome to the new hipphoto.com! Take a moment and explore, let me know what you think! I'm going to try and keep you updated here on cool new stuff I'm working on, maybe post some new pictures, just let you know what's going on!

Here's an image I just dug up from a trip over to the Grand Tetons this past summer -- seems like an optimistic way to launch the new site!
